We hire a 2022 Range Rover Sport and a 2022 Range Rover Vogue. Five seats each, the same supercharged V8, and the same permanent four-wheel drive. The new-shape Range Rover has dropped the Vogue name entirely — this page is about the 2022 pair we actually have on our fleet, not the replacement.
The question is simple. One of these cars is built around the driver. The other is built around everyone else in it, and everything you need to fit behind them.
Take the Vogue if you are being driven
The Vogue is the car you want to be sitting in. A quieter cabin, more room in the second row, and space that earns its keep on the first proper day — Queenstown down toward Tekapo, or the full run through to Christchurch. If someone else is handling the Crown Range, this is the car the passengers will be glad of by Wanaka.
It is also the luggage answer. Ski gear, golf clubs, a pram, two weeks of South Island packing — the Vogue has the bigger boot and a split tailgate, so you load once at the airport and do not think about it again. That is what this generation of Range Rover does well: the trip happens inside the car, not around the boot.
If you are four or five adults sharing a week of hotels and a lot of kilometres, start here. The Sport is still a full-size SUV. The Vogue is just the bigger one, and that extra room is what this group uses.
Take the Sport if you want to drive
The Sport is the better car from behind the wheel. It sits lower, it responds faster, and it rewards you for paying attention. The road out of Frankton toward the Crown Range, the lake road to Glenorchy, a day where the driving is genuinely the point — that is a Sport week.
The Sport is still a full-size SUV. The Vogue is simply bigger — more second-row room, more boot. Two of you will be happy in the Sport all week. Kids in the back will be happy in the Sport. Four or five adults on a long South Island loop, with a week of bags, will be happier in the Vogue.
If what you really want is sports-car corners, that is still a Porsche Cayenne. The Sport is a Range Rover that enjoys being driven. It is not a Cayenne.
Two of you, or two plus kids
Two adults will be comfortable in the Sport all week. Two adults and children will be comfortable in the Sport all week — child seats fit, the cabin is still a Range Rover, and the person driving gets the more engaging car.
The Vogue makes just as much sense for that same couple if the luggage is the issue: ski bags, a long villa stay, more cases than a weekend trip. If the boot is the constraint, take the Vogue regardless of the passenger count. If it is not, take the Sport and enjoy it.
Four or five adults: take the Vogue
There is a straightforward rule for a long South Island week. Four adults, five adults, two couples and a friend — book the Vogue. More room in the second row, a bigger boot, and a cabin that still feels composed at the end of a day that started in Queenstown and finished in Christchurch.
Share the driving. The Vogue is the more comfortable car for the people who are not at the wheel.
