What's Changed for Winter 2026
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has introduced new enforcement under its Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2025. From winter 2026, drivers who fail to fit snow chains in snowy or icy conditions on Council-managed roads — including ski field access roads — can face a $750 fine, issued by Police.
The rule is simple: fit chains (or an approved alternative like AutoSocks) when snow is settling on the road, when a "chains required" variable message sign is displayed, or when instructed by Police, ski field staff, or QLDC.
Every ski field also asks that you carry chains at all times on their access roads during winter, even on clear days. Alpine conditions change quickly, and the requirement can be introduced at any point in the day.

Some ski fields/ski resorts might require you to carry or fit snow chains (or the AutoSock alternative) in order to use their access roads.
What Are AutoSocks?
AutoSocks are textile-based traction devices designed to provide enhanced grip on snow and ice. They are a modern, user-friendly alternative to traditional metal snow chains and are perfect for improving vehicle safety in winter conditions. How AutoSocks Work
AutoSocks work by increasing friction between the tires and the road surface. The textile material adapts to the tire’s shape and provides a larger contact area, improving traction. They are designed to be used at low speeds and are ideal for short stretches of road where traditional snow chains would be required.

When and How to Use AutoSocks
Use AutoSocks, unless you are directed to only use snow chains.
Before you set off, check the latest road conditions and weather forecasts. Be aware of any legal requirements for snow chains on your route.
If you encounter snowy or icy conditions, stop in a safe location to install the AutoSocks. Follow the simple instructions provided with the product to ensure a secure fit.
With AutoSocks fitted, drive at a moderate speed and avoid sudden acceleration, braking, or sharp turns. AutoSocks are designed for temporary use and should be removed when you reach clear, dry roads.
Fitting Chains or AutoSocks to Your Apolicar: The Rules
Our fleet is not an ordinary rental fleet, and chains fitted incorrectly can cause serious damage. If chains are required, follow these rules without exception:
1. Rear tyres only. Snow chains must ONLY be fitted to the rear tyres of your Apolicar vehicle. Never fit chains to the front.
2. Raise the air suspension. Before fitting chains, set the air suspension to its highest off-road setting. This provides the clearance the chains need.
3. Keep it under 40 km/h. With chains or AutoSocks fitted, your speed must be limited to a maximum of 40 km/h at all times.
4. Remove them at the bottom. Chains and AutoSocks must be removed as soon as you reach the bottom of the ski field access road. Driving on clear seal with chains fitted damages both the road and the vehicle.
5. Fit them where directed. Use the marked chain bays and follow instructions from ski field road crews — they're there to help, and most fields will lend a hand if you ask.

Ski Field Access Roads at a Glance
Every mountain has its own rules. Here's what to expect on the access roads this season — and remember: check the ski field's snow report (updated from 6:30am daily) before you leave.
Coronet Peak & The Remarkables
The closest fields to Queenstown. Coronet Peak's access road is fully sealed, but chains must be carried at all times and fitted when the road crew directs — they'll be positioned on the road at the fitting point.
Cardrona & Treble Cone
Carry chains at all times and fit them where indicated. Keep left, drive to the conditions, and follow instructions from road staff — buses and machinery share the road. If conditions look beyond your comfort level, both fields run free shuttles from the bottom of their access roads.
Mt Hutt (Canterbury)
The steepest test of the lot: a 14 km unsealed access road climbing to 1,597 m. Chains must always be carried, and 4WD vehicles can be required to fit chains at any time during the season. Two chain bays sit roughly 2 km and 7.5 km up the road; the snow report will tell you if and where fitting is required.

All Apolicar vehicles include AutoSock, rental-queenstown), a legal, tyre-friendly alternative to traditional metal snow chains recommended for our vehicles. Please note, however, that some ski fields now require metal snow chains and do not accept AutoSocks. We recommend checking the access requirements of the ski field you plan to visit before you travel.

Yes. All vehicles in our fleet are full 4WD SUVs purpose-built for alpine conditions. Combined with the included AutoSocks, you can navigate challenging winter mountain roads safely and in total comfort.
If you are wanting to drive on unmade roads, this is fine with all the vehicles in our fleet. If you are planning on driving completely off-road, you should consider the Land Rover Defender vehicles, as these are ideally suited. The speed limit for any off-road use (including unmade roads) is limited to 40kmh.
