Nevis Road Driving Guide

Nevis Road connects Garrowburn (near Kingston) to Bannockburn (near Cromwell) in Central Otago. The best option is to start on the Bannockburn side here, and do not progress further than the ford unless you are an experienced offroad driver.

The road stretches approximately 65 km and takes 3 to 4 hours to drive, depending on conditions.

The road is closed in winter (June – September) due to snow and ice. The best time to visit is late spring, summer, or early autumn when conditions are dry and safe.

Expect gravel surfaces, steep drop-offs, and multiple river crossings. Nevis Road is suitable only for 4WD vehicles, and experience with off-road driving is recommended.

The weather in the Nevis Valley can change rapidly. Always check conditions before departure and be prepared for sudden rain or temperature drops.
