### What a Q7 hire is actually selling

A Q7 in a premium hire class is commonly listed as “Audi Q7 AWD or similar” — five seats, four bags, automatic — without naming the engine. In practice you are likely to collect a 2.0-litre diesel, and the same is true of a Q8 in that class. You are reserving a category, and “or similar” is how that booking can become a different vehicle at the counter.

We do not hire that way. The Defender 110, Defender 130, Range Rover Sport, or Range Rover Vogue on your confirmation is the car that will be waiting: exact model, guaranteed. If we cannot do that date in that car, we tell you before you pay.

Every Defender we hire is a 3.0-litre in-line six — petrol P400 in the 110, diesel D300 in the 130s — because the engine is on the fleet page, not implied by a class code. A 2.0-litre four and a 3.0-litre six are a different week on alpine roads, even before you get to seats and boot.

### Size: five seats, four bags, and how the car sits

A Q7 is pitched as a full-size SUV, but in person it sits lower and occupies less of the road than a Defender, and the listing matches that: five people, four bags, not a seven-seat family hauler. It is a competent, family-shaped, road-biased car.

The Defender 110 is the honest five-seat like-for-like against that line: same passenger count, more presence, a proper viewing position on alpine roads, and a 3.0-litre six under the bonnet.

Boot is where the comparison comes apart. Behind the second row, a current five-seat Q7 is in the high-700s of litres, while a Defender 110 is about 916–972 litres. A Q8, when it appears as a guaranteed model, is still five seats and four bags, with about 605 litres behind the second row — roughly 45–50 percent of a Defender 130 with the third row folded (about 1,2261,329 litres wet), so more than twice the Q8 and about 70 percent more than that Q7. If you need seven or eight seats after you land, that is a 130 conversation — including the 2025 D300 HSE — not a Q7 conversation.

4WD is the sensible choice on these roads in any month. Wet alpine passes, a greasy Crown Range, ski access with chains or AutoSocks — a Defender is built for that week. A road-biased SUV can do a dry highway; that is not the same job.

### The rate is not the product

A Q7 class can look cheaper than a Defender on a given day, and that can reverse, because a cheaper headline is often a different car, a class instead of a model, and cover that is not the same package. One-way South Island hire is a different product again, and none of those dollars belong on this page.

The Defender 130 is not a Q7 substitute. It is the eight-seat alpine car, or the five-seat week with a boot that actually takes the trip, and you should not shop it as if it were a five-seat, four-bag class.

### If you wanted the Q7 to feel special

Some people want a large premium SUV to feel like a treat. Sit in a Q7 and it is a competent, low, family-shaped car — fine on the motorway — but it is not a Range Rover week.

The Range Rover Sport Supercharged V8 is the other door: height, the V8, air suspension, and the way it takes a ski-field access road and then dinner without changing character.
